Post Typhoon Yolanda: San Roque Chapel

I attended the Sunday Mass on the Feast of the Epiphany in the Yolanda-typhoon-destroyed Chapel of Brgy. Catmon, the farthest rural Barangay of the Municipality of Tanauan, in the Province of Leyte, Philippines. January 5, 2014.

SOLEMNITY OF MARY, MOTHER OF GOD

Today is the liturgical feast of the our mother, the Blessed Virgin Mary honoring her divine motherhood to Jesus Christ.

"Mary, the all-holy ever-virgin Mother of God, is the masterwork of the mission of the Son and the Spirit in the fullness of time. For the first time in the plan of salvation and because his Spirit had prepared her, the Father found the dwelling place where his Son and his Spirit could dwell among men. In this sense the Church's Tradition has often read the most beautiful texts on wisdom in relation to Mary. Mary is acclaimed and represented in the liturgy as the "Seat of Wisdom." — Catechism of the Catholic Church 721

Simbang Gabi - Las Piñas Bamboo Organ Church

The first day of Simbang Gabi is celebrated with much fanfare in churches throughout the Philippine archipelago. Celebration of Simbang Gabi in Las Piñas Bamboo Organ Church in Las Piñas City is very popular among the catholic faithful for a very "Pinoy" in tradition. 

Simbáng Gabi is a devotional nine day novena Mass practiced by Roman Catholics in the Philippines in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary in anticipation of Christmas. Simbáng Gabi, meaning "Night Mass", is held from December 16 to December 24 and is usually done at 4 o' clock in the morning. On the last day of the Simbang Gabi, which is Christmas Eve, it is called Misa De Gallo, which literally translates to "Rooster's Mass".

3rd Presbyteral Anniversary Of Rev. Fr. Angel Sanchez

Rev. Fr. Angel Sanchez, parish priest of the Last Supper of Our Lord Parish, celebrated his 3rd Sacerdotal Anniversary yesterday, Wednesday, December 11, 2013. Thanksgiving Mass was held at 6:30 AM. Also in attendance as co-celebrants of the Holy Mass were Rev. Fr. Don Cambe, parish priest of San Isidro Labrador Parish; Rev. Fr. Jojo Sadia, Uphdmc Chaplaincy; and Rev. Fr. Vincent Rozario. 

After the mass, a simple breakfast followed at the multi-purpose hall of the formation center.

PLSOL Advent Recollection 2013

The Parish of the Last Supper of Our Lord (PLSOL) held it's annual Advent Recollection last Sunday, December 8, 2013. Attended by parishioners and church workers led by parish priest Rev. Fr. Angel Sanchez.

Guest Speaker was Rev. Fr. Maxell Aranilla,  presently the Principal of Our Lady of Guadalupe Minor Seminary, the Director-Principal of Guadalupe Catholic School, and a Philosophy Professor in San Carlos Seminary, all in Makati City.

Fr. Maxell talk about Advent of Coming, Advent of Waiting, Advent of Beginning and Advent of Dwelling. He also pointed out of two significant persons in Advent, and that's the blessed virgin Mary. She's the witness from the conception, until the death of our Lord Jesus and John the Baptist, who prepared the way for the coming of our Messiah. He leads the people to the direction of Jesus.

Let us serve as the spotlight of real "HIGHLIGHT" of this advent season which is "JESUS".

TYPHOON YOLANDA: FLIGHT OF HOPE (FOH) MEDICAL, DENTAL AND RELIEF MISSION

The medical-dental missions were done for two days with the following specifics :

November 22 (8 am-5pm)- Barugo Leyte Municipal Grounds

November 23 (11 am- 4pm)- Barangay Catmon,Tanauan,Leyte

Cleaning & dressing of wounds

Deworming

Dental extraction

Random Blood Sugar Monitoring (RBS)

Free Medicine

Others : Feeding (Nutritional support)

Psychosocial Activities (for children)

Accomplishments :

Day 1 : 751 (711 Medical 40 Dental) patients served

Day 2: 664 (634 Medical 30 Dental) patients served

Total patients : 1425

All patients served were written as to name, age and diagnosis (logbooks were used for documentation) with the following information gathered :

1.1-4 years old 18 %

2.5-9 years old 14 %

Elderly (60 and above) 12 %

10-14 years old 8 %

45-49 years old 7 %

Less than one year old 6 %

Morbidity By Percentage :

AURI 40 %

FUNGAL INFECTIONS 25%

HYPERTENSION 21%

INFECTED WOUND 8%

SPRAIN/STRAIN 6%

PNEUMONIA 6%

AGE 6%

SKIN DISEASES 5%

ASTHMA/COPD 3%

PUNCTURED WOUND 3%

Other notable illnesses treated : Diabetes, Gastritis, Allergies,& five (5) cases of Post Traumatic Disorders.

Respiratory infections were expected to dominate given the young majority population who were vulnerable and the meager potable water supply. Since water was also crucial, skin infections were many as wound hygiene was compromised. Fungal infections were common especially since rain has been fairly common and a damp environment makes it thrive. Asthma & COPD were common because of concomitant allergens (decomposed materials) and the mere absence of their regular medications. Hypertension among adults was due to unavailability of their maintenance medicine and stress from the Yolanda experience.

Recommendations:

1.Medical outreach should focus on the aforementioned illnesses as these were common among the 3 barangays we served.

2.Drinkable water supply and ORS should be readily available.

3.There is a need for stress debriefing to account for the trauma especially among children and the elderly.
